PARTS OF TYPICAL ROOT:
1.ROOT CAP: Parenchymatous multicellular structure at the tip of root that secrete mucilage and help the root to penetrate the soil .Its outer cells are worn out due to soil friction but are continuously replaced by new ones .Root caps are absent in hydrophytes where root pockets are present.
2.MERISTEMATIC GROWING ZONE:1mm in length cells of this region have the power of division they add cells towards root cap as well as towards the upper region.
3.ZONE OF ELONGATION: Cells of this region are elongated it is next to the meristematic zone, these cells loses the power of division .This is the zone of absorption of water and mineral from soil.
4. ROOT HAIR ZONE:1-6 cm long above the zone of elongation ,the cells are elongated ,root hairs are present that enhances the surface are for absorption of water and minerals. The cells of this region are mature and show differentiation to form cells of xylem phloem etc. Root hair surface goes on increasing as the root continue to grow.
ZONE OF MATURE CELLS: Major portion of root has zone of mature cells where cells do not undergo any further change .This provide mechanical support to the root.
QUISCENT CENTER: The region of inactive cells so they have light cytoplasm and small nuclei they replace the cells of root cap.
